FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 25, 2009 – K.L. Brady thinks women need a cure for “Wrong Men-itis” …so she wrote a prescription in the form of her first novel.
“The Bum Magnet” chronicles a year in the life of realtor Charisse Tyson who wonders why she attracts “fixer-uppers” and searches the nightmares of her boyfriend’s past for answers. Charisse seems to have it all-a great job, a dream car, and a McMansion in high-and-mightyville. Everything in her life is just right…except the Mister. While lamenting the break-up with her most recent “the one” during a holiday meltdown, Charisse realizes she has a type when it comes to men-players, players, and more players. A magazine article motivates her to swear off men and examine the complex roots of her romantic fiascos.
Just five simple steps to transform Charisse’s love life to the stuff of legends, right? Life is never that easy.
Brady, a D.C. native who lives in Prince George’s County, the setting of her new novel, says she is often asked if the book is based on her personal experiences. “Let’s put it this way, when I told my family and friends I wrote a book called the The Bum Magnet, they all asked, ‘Is it an autobiography?'”
Brady works for a major government contracting firm and is an active real estate agent with Exit Realty. She’s an alumnus of the University of the District of Columbia and University of Maryland University College, earning a B.A. in Economics and M.B.A., respectively. She lives just outside of D.C. with her son, William.
The Bum Magnet is available on Amazon.com and at bookstores nationwide.

The Bum Magnet Author Joins Operation Ebook Drop
By LadyLit Press

Dated: Oct 10, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New program aims to provide free ebooks to troops serving overseas.

PRLog (Press Release) – October 10, 2009 – K.L. Brady, author of the hilarious novel The Bum Magnet,
has joined a group of over 60 independentauthors with books published in Kindle and other Ebook formats to provide free ebooks to troops serving overseas.
Operation Ebook Drop, created by US Army veteran and indie author Edward Patterson, began when
Patterson had a chance encounter with a deploying soldier. The soldier indicated he had a Kindle but could
not access books, so Ed offered up his 13 Kindle edition novels and enlisted Brady and other indie authors
to join the program. Smashwords.com founder Mark L. Coker heard about the effort and has been a major
proponent and supporter. Through his site, authors create 100-percent discount coupons so that troops can
download indie novels for free. So far, Operation Ebook drop provided free books to nearly 30 US troops,
but the number is growing every day.
“I jumped at the opportunity to offer The Bum Magnet in the program. As a military contractor, I got an up
close and personal view of what the troops do for our country every day,” says Brady, who worked at the
Pentagon and supported the Iraq effort for several years before publishing her novel. “They make enormous
sacrifices, and this program offered me a small way to provide them with laughter, enjoyment, and
say ‘I appreciate what you’re doing. Thanks.’”

Local Self-Published Author Inks Two-Book Deal with Simon & Schuster
By LadyLit Press
Dated May 19, 2010

Washington D.C. native and author K.L. Brady announced that she has signed a two-book deal with Simon & Schuster’s Pocket imprint, which will publish her hilarious debut novel, The Bum Magnet. Originally self-published, the book is scheduled to be released in July 2011.
After penning her novel in fall 2008, Brady tried to find a literary agent, but met the fate of many first-time novelists—rejection. However, unlike many first-timers, she refused to throw her manuscript in a drawer and start anew. No. She decided to let readers determine whether or not they liked it for themselves. “I really believed in my story, so I published my novel with one goal in mind—to build my audience. I told myself I wanted to sell 5,000 books –e-book or paperback—in one year. Then, if I decided to go the traditional route in the future, I’d have an unpublished manuscript and an audience waiting to read it in hand.”
Brady avoided the often high-cost services like AuthorHouse and iUniverse, opting instead to use print-on-demand services directly tied to Amazon and international book distributors, Ingram and Baker and Taylor. By preparing her own files and using their low-cost set-up services, she published her novel for a song compared to what many novice authors pay. Then she put her MBA to good use and promoted aggressively on-line, mostly using free services and techniques. “I’ve heard some authors say they’ve spend thousands of dollars to get their books printed and marketed. I paid less than $400 to get my book print-ready, and I got national distribution to boot. My book was approved by the Barnes & Noble small press buyer, and they ended up stocking them in a few stores. My marketing efforts mostly required time, not a lot of money at all.”
Although Brady sold a moderate number of her books through retail channels, her major success came when she reduced the price of her e-book on Amazon Kindle. Her sales increased dramatically and word of mouth spread. “I dropped the price to ninety-nine cents to expand my audience. I started getting emails from readers around the country saying how much they loved it.  Then one day I received a note from an executive editor at a publishing house saying that she was interested in speaking with me about my book. I liked the control self-publishing offered. But I figured if I could be successful on my own, I could be even more successful with a publishing house behind me.”
Brady discovered that interest from a well-respected publisher made finding a literary agent much easier. Her agent put the book on submission and within four weeks she had interest from multiple publishing houses. She ended up selecting Simon & Schuster, a success she might not have achieved were it not for self-publishing. “You know, people say so many negative things about self-publishing, but I believe, over time, self publishing will be viewed less as the scourge of the publishing world and more as a proving ground major publisher’s—to some degree— will leverage to determine which books they want to invest in. They can buy market-tested material, which benefits the author, the publisher, the industry, and, most importantly, the readers.”
